AUTISM

Autism is characterized by impairment in social interaction and associated behaviours. The rate of Autism is rising significantly. In 2015, the CDC reported that 1 in 68 children are identified with Autism in North America. Experts believe the rising rate is due to improved detection and broadening the definition of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism Assessments

The gold standard for establishing a diagnosis involves an interdisciplinary assessment including a pediatric consultation in collaboration with a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) or an Occupational Therapist (OT) and using a standardized assessment tool such as the ADOS-2.  The ADOS-2 is a semi structured assessment tool of social interaction, play, communication, and imaginative use of materials. This is the clinical assessment used at most regional diagnostic centres. Currently, there is a long waiting list for these publicly funded clinics.

At Friedman Brain, we provide Autism assessments in 2 formats:

  • Complete Interdisciplinary Assessment:
This diagnostic assessment involves evaluation of your child by Dr. Friedman and a specialized Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) or Occupational Therapist (OT) and includes the use of the ADOS-2. Dr. Friedman obtains a detailed history and performs a general and neurological examination to look for associated clinical features. If applicable, a day care or school questionnaire is completed by the teacher to provide insight into your child’s social interactions. Families receive a written report summarizing the team’s findings. There is a follow-up visit to receive personalized feedback and recommendations. There is a fee for this interdisciplinary assessment.  Physician services are fully covered by OHIP however administration of the ADOS is not covered by OHIP. These fees may be covered by your employment insurance policy.
  • Pediatric Consultation:
Dr. Friedman evaluates your child by obtaining a detailed history and performing a general and neurological examination to look for associated clinical features. If applicable, a day care or school questionnaire is completed by the teacher to provide insight into your child’s social interactions. If the clinical features are such that a diagnosis of Autism can be established with confidence without further testing, Dr. Friedman will prepare a diagnostic report. The family will have an opportunity to receive personalized feedback and recommendations at a follow-up appointment.

What can I do before the assessment?

  • Be familiar and review the “Red Flags” and clinical features of Autism.
  • Have the day care or school complete the Teacher Questionnaire and fax it to our office
